Football in Smarden.
The village of Smarden has had a Saturday football side since the early 1900’s when games used to be played on the site of the current cricket square on the village green. It was not until the 1970’s that the football club relocated to Corne’s Meadow behind the (new) pavilion where the pitch has remained ever since.
The Saturday side has played in both the Maidstone and Ashford leagues over the years and also spent more than 10 years in the Kent County League in the 90’s. Club silverware can be found in the trophy cabinet at the Flying Horse Pub where team photos through the ages can also be seen, along with players enjoying a pint (in the off season).
The club has always been blessed with a good selection of local players and managers from Smarden and the surrounding villages.

The Troggs FC
In 1980, Bill Brown, who was running a successful 5 a side youth club team decided to form an 11 a side team in the Ashford Sunday League and Troggs became the Smarden Sunday side. After many successful years in the Ashford League including several league and cup wins, the Troggs moved to the Maidstone League where they had two teams for several seasons. The first team played in the top division before moving back to Ashford in recent times. The Troggs currently have both first and reserves teams in the Ashford and District League.
Smarden Junior Football Club was established in 1995 and is affiliated to Kent County Football Association. The Club has received the prestigious Football Associated Charter Standard Club Award in recognition of the safe and happy environment the Club provides to its members. This season the Club have 25 children on the register.
Smarden Junior Football Club's commitment is to provide opportunities for young people between the ages of 12 and 16 to receive soccer coaching from FA qualified coaches. To play competitive matches in the Weald of Kent Friendly League (u14s) and the Ashford and District Youth League (U16s) and to enable all players to take part in Club tournaments for all members to learn new skills and enjoy playing football.
